Ruby somehow managed to evade an actual hospital visit over the week when Hani and Amir were away. But she ate what was put in front of her and used Amir’s gym to increase her fitness. But still the domestic wing of the palace was empty and the lack of people and activity was oppressing her more each day.

This was what her life was going to be like. On her own. Like her mother. And, like her mother, she’d be prey to the darkness of spirit that seeped into your soul stealthily at first. Then, when you finally noticed its presence, it was too late. It engulfed you.

She snatched a lungful of air, as if she were suffocating. She wasn’t her mother. She wasn’t her mother, she repeated with more force. She had choices. She had people she could turn to. But here, away from her usual support network, she felt isolated and alone in a way she hadn’t been in years.

The evenings were the worst. Like now, she thought, as she walked along the empty corridors. Amir had said that the palace was to be her home, but she wondered if he knew the meaning of the word. A more “un-homelike” place she’d yet to see. Every wall bore a proud portrait of one of his ancestors, and every sideboard either featured photographs of Amir’s dead wife, or priceless china from centuries ago, which Hani was never allowed to go near. It was like a morgue, a gallery, a museum dedicated to people and institutions long dead.

It needed life, she thought, as she straightened a painting of a woman, beautifully dressed and seated serenely amidst half a dozen children “I bet you didn’t have to worry about a thing, did you?” She tilted her head to one side as she inspected the family group. If this family had lived here—and it looked like they had, from the background of port and sea, which had barely been touched in hundreds of years—these corridors wouldn’t have been as quiet as they were now. No, the place demanded a family. Ruby narrowed her eyes as she looked around at the beautiful spaces. No, she thought again, it demanded people. And didn’t she know where she could get those?

She glanced at her watch. It was late. She’d done what she’d promised Amir, up till now. She hadn’t contacted the photographer who’d was shooting a designer collection at the port. But she knew they were still there. It would have been hard to ignore them as they featured heavily in the social media of all her friends. They were in the country for just two more days. And, while it was late, her friends partied late. As she rang the photographer she pondered on whether she was breaking Amir’s protocol. But in all the memories of him telling her what she could and couldn’t do, none of it concerned the possibility of her inviting people over. No doubt the possibility hadn’t even entered his head.
